Tell us about yourself

Hello, I’m Alan. I live in Utah with my wife and four children. I like to garden and spend time outside. I enjoy games of all kinds and (of course) I love to visualize data. My professional background is in graphic design and I currently work as a Principal Product Designer at Adobe, but I’ve always had a strong analytical side. I love the way a good visualization helps me understand something that’s complex—something I wouldn’t understand (at least not very well) without a visualization. I recently started to teach data visualization at Brigham Young University where I get to see young designers bring data to life.

How did you hear about DVS?

I’m not exactly sure where I first heard about DVS… Twitter most likely. But I do remember being really excited and engaged those first few years. It’s been exciting to see the Society grow into the community we have today.

What has been the most beneficial aspect of being a DVS member?

After years of reading books and practising my craft in relative isolation, it’s been wonderful to interact with experts and enthusiasts; nerds like myself. I’ve made friends and formed connections that have helped me learn and grow. But the best part of having a place to turn when I get stuck, need advice, or want to share an accomplishment. What we have as a community is truly special.
