We build digital and physical experiences for brand activations
We’re adapting a web-based county-level interactive map covering 11 measures of business activity across the U.S. — into a large-format touchscreen experience. The existing web tool is built for researchers and economic developers. The touchscreen version needs to work for someone who walks up, has no context, and gives it ninety seconds.
Scope
Full UI and UX for the touchscreen experience: map navigation, county selection, drill-down into indicator detail, comparison between places
Rethink how 11 indicators get surfaced. The web version leans on dropdowns and filters; we need something more physical and more immediate.
Motion design — transitions between national, state, and county views; how data animates when an indicator changes; what the map does while nobody’s touching it
Attract loop, reset behavior, and a graceful path back to zero state after someone walks away
Prototype plus a spec the build team can develop against
Design problems we’d want you to have opinions about
Choropleth legibility at distance and at scale. Rural counties are large and sparse; the places the index is actually about are geographically big and demographically small
How to make percentile rankings and index scores feel meaningful to a non-expert without flattening the methodology
Touch targets on a county map. Some counties are enormous, some are slivers
Making a national dataset feel personal in the first ten seconds
What we’re looking for
Portfolio with at least one data-driven interactive you can walk us through in depth — editorial graphics, exhibit or museum work, brand installations, or an information-dense product interface
Genuine data visualization chops
Motion as a core skill
Fluency designing for touch: no hover, no keyboard, gesture conventions, glare, standing sightlines
Experience with cartographic design or GIS is a strong plus, as is prior work with Mapbox, MapLibre, D3, or deck.gl even if you weren’t the one implementing
Details
Start immediately, 2 full weeks of iterative design rounds. Flat fee to be negotiated.
