September 17 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT

Join Ryan Shields to discover why millions tune in for maps and graphs—and learn how to create visual stories that inspire action.

Ryan produces maps and graphs at Newpress, the studio behind Tunnel VisionThe Bigger PictureSearch Party, & the Emmy-winning Johnny Harris YouTube channel (9.79 million subscribers combined).

Drawing on a decade of experience working with maps, data science, and social media, Ryan Shields will walk you through 4 lessons he’s learned from top YouTubers that you can immediately apply to create data visualizations that will inspire action and connect with the audiences that most need to see your work.

Before producing videos with maps and graphs on YouTube, Ryan created maps, graphs, and data infrastructure for tourism, conservation, and disaster response. Collaborators and partners include the UN Environmental Programme, The Nature Conservancy, the Red Cross, African Parks, FEMA, various government ministries across the Caribbean, and state and local governments across the US. Ryan earned a BS in Geography and an MS in Wildlife and Wildlands Conservation from Brigham Young University.
